Can DNA Testing Verify Your Genealogical Research?
Absolutely—and our DNA SIG is here to help you explore how.
Genetic testing has opened an exciting new chapter in family history research. It doesn’t replace traditional records-based genealogy, but it does add powerful tools that can:
- Identify relatives who share a common ancestor with you.
- Confirm family lines you’ve already researched.
- Provide new clues to help break through “brick walls.”
- Connect you with others researching the same families.
Our group meets to learn, share, and discuss real DNA case studies, tools, and strategies that turn raw test results into meaningful genealogical discoveries.
What Types of DNA Tests Are There?
There are three main types:
- Y-DNA (paternal line) – traces a father-to-son line, often used for surname studies.
- mtDNA (maternal line) – follows a direct line from mothers to children.
- Autosomal DNA – the most common test, covering both sides of your family and useful for cousin matching and ethnicity estimates.
About Our DNA SIG
Our DNA Special Interest Group (SIG) meets monthly to explore how genetic testing can enhance family history research. We share case studies, demonstrate tools, and work together to solve real genealogical puzzles using DNA evidence. Whether you’re just beginning or have years of experience, you’ll find a supportive community ready to help you confirm your tree, connect with cousins, and break through brick walls.
Curious? Bring your questions, your DNA
results, or just your interest.
Everyone is welcome!
